Description

Ruk’u’x’Ulew Ceremonial Cacao Paste, 454 grams

Ruk’u’x’Ulew is 100% Mayan owned, an all indigenous women’s collective producing artisanal Guatemalan grown ceremonial Cacao.

“We source all our premium ceremonial grade cacao from Alta Verapaz, Guatemala and process it here in San Marcos La Laguna, on the shores of Lake Atitlan. Each bean is fermented, sun-dried, lightly roasted and peeled by hand. It is milled in small batches, packaged fresh and enjoyed around the world

The founder, Cecilia was given the name Ruk’u’x Ulew [Roo-Koosh-Ouh-Leh-Ou] by the fire spirits as the name for her cacao business. It is a word from her native language, Kaqchikel , and translates as ‘Heart of The Earth’. She feels this not only honors her Mayan culture and ancestry but also relays her belief that cacao is a divine representation of the ‘Heart of The Earth.’

There is joy, love and beauty in our cacao process

What makes your cacao ‘ceremonial?ʼ
We understand that cacao is a sacred plant spirit with the ability to open the heart. The powerful effects of drinking pure cacao is becoming globally recognized. We respect the spirit of this plant and we are guided by the cacao spirit. Our ancestors have been working with cacao ceremoniously and we carry forth their wisdom into the process. When you experience our cacao, you will taste more than cacao, there is love and spirit.

What makes your business a womenʼs cooperative?
Our business helps to support and provide work to Mayan women, ranging from young mothers to grandmothers. We are able to provide jobs for up to 15 women in our village with the sales of our cacao.”
